Playdate’s Story Hour will feature a dynamic reading of Faith Ringgold’s 2016 book We Came to America in celebration of the first Thanksgiving and the timeless narrative of migrating in search of a new life.

Percussion Workshop
We will celebrate the drum as the first instrument that Pilgrims heard upon arriving in America with famed Brazilian jazz drummer Annette Aguilar. Annette will teach about the drums, orchestrate a jam session, and close the day with a dynamic performance.

Sunday’s performance will occur in observation of the city’s 13th Annual Latin American Cultural Week Celebration occurring across New York City November 13-21st. Aguilar is a former percussionist with The Grateful Dead. Her band Aguilar & the String Beans has toured nationally and abroad.

To continue our yearlong celebration of the prolific legacy of Faith Ringgold, we make art inspired by the exhibition Sugar Hill Songbook with a specific focus on her 2016 book We Came To America.
Programs and performances are inspired by our new exhibitions on view, Sugar Hill Songbook: Select Work by Faith Ringgold, Justin Favela: Recuérdame, and Yuken Teruya: Cutting Trees.
